William Beaumont papers, 1763-1891.

The collection is comprised primarily of family correspondence and deeds. The correspondence paints a vivid picture of Beaumont's formative years in Champlain, Plattsburgh, and at Mackinac Island. Contained within this collection are letters from William Beaumont to his parents, Samuel and Lucretia Beaumont, and to his brothers Samuel Jr. and Abel, as well as some family correspondence written by Abel and Samuel, Jr. Although there is no specific mention of Beaumont's experimentation on Alexis St. Martin in these letters, Beaumont does discuss, in a letter of November 18, 1834, the publication of his book, Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice and the Physiology of Digestion (1833). Letters in this collection offer the reader insight into family and military life and medicine during the early 19th century. Through his correspondence, his affection and devotion for both his family and his patients is evident. Also part of the collection are eighteenth-century family deeds to land in Lebanon, Connecticut and Lucretia Beaumont's 1799 copybook in which she practiced penmanship.
